Learning at Ashland, The Henry Clay Estate in Lexington, Kentucky

Plan a Field Trip

There is plenty to see and do at Ashland and the staff works to customize programs for school groups.  The 17 acre property  includes an historic mansion, carriage house, smokehouse, ice houses a dairy cellar and more.  The wooded grounds contain walking paths, a formal garden and  playing fields.  A 20 x 40 tent is available from April-October.  There is ample parking for school buses at Ashland.

Groups of 10 or more must book their tours in advance. Large groups (60 or more people) may require special formatting and therefore should book at least three weeks in advance.

Tours

Mansion Tour  This artifact driven tour takes students through the downstairs and upstairs of the Clay house.  Though guides focus on Henry Clay and compromise, other themes can be added to coordinate more closely with specific lessons.  The length of the tour varies by the ages of students, requests from teachers and the number of students touring.  Group tours typically start at a quarter or half past the hour.

The Trees of Ashland  This tour includes the formal garden and the grounds with an emphasis on identifying and learning about trees and leaves. There are 40 different varieties of trees at Ashland. This tour can be taken on its own in approximately one hour or combined with the house tour for a two hour time. This tour should be scheduled at least three weeks in advance.

Holidays at Ashland In late November through December, holiday tours are offered. Each year the house is decorated around a different theme.  Our theme for 2013 is Currier and Ives.  Students will see a number of Currier and Currier and Ives prints on their tour.
