As the famous saying goes, “The best way to someone’s heart is through their stomach!” Our first family artifact submission knows all about that as did Henry Clay’s wife, Lucretia.
This bell (pictured left) was submitted by Janis from Lexington who tells us it was used by her grandmother to call her grandfather to dinner of fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, and pie. Janis’ grandfather was probably happy to have a good hot meal and felt the love of his wife who made it for him.
Lucretia Hart Clay supported her husband’s career by managing the home and serving as a hostess to Henry’s many famous guests. Lucretia was known for her strawberry ice cream. This urn is part of her dessert service which she used to serve the ice cream that Clay and his guests so enjoyed.
Though the times have changed, sharing your love for your family through food sure hasn’t.
