Ashland Tours

Ashland has three tours that guests can enjoy: Signature Tour, Women’s Voices Tour, and Art & Grounds Tour. You may purchase tickets in advance for these tours by clicking the buttons below. Tickets are also sold in our Museum Store on a first come, first served basis.

Please arrive 5-10 minutes before your tour begins to allow adequate time to purchase tickets in person and check-in. This ensures that the tour starts on time and that guests don’t miss the beginning of the tour.

To take advantage of the full, “Ashland Experience” you’ll want to allow additional time to see the permanent Henry Clay exhibit room and to browse the Museum Store. Outdoor options are plentiful with a self-guided tour of the outbuildings, formal garden, and walking trails available. The grounds are free to visit year-round, but you can take our new Art & Grounds tour if you’d like a guided grounds experience. See below for more info!

The highlight of a visit to Ashland is the guided Signature Tour of the 18-room mansion. You will enter the front door and begin a journey through the Clay family mansion and time travel from the 18th-century to the present. The tour covers all aspects of Henry Clay’s life and explores the contributions of later generations who called Ashland home.

Our  Women’s Voices tour focuses on nine women of Ashland who span a century of social, cultural, and political evolution. As you visit the rooms they inhabited, you’ll hear their voices–the causes they championed, the challenges they faced, and the heartache they suffered. It also explores the changing role of women from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century.

  • Length of Tour: 45 minutes to 1 hour

History, art, and science intertwine on Ashland’s Art & Grounds tour. Explore Henry Clay’s lifelong interest in agriculture, take a stroll on one of Clay’s walking paths, and interact with John Henry’s “Monumental” sculptures while enjoying the beauty of this historic arboretum and home of Henry Clay. Ashland docents lead these 45-minute walking tours, offering historical background, tree identification, and stories about the people who lived and worked on these grounds.

  • When: Tuesday-Saturday (Beginning August 6th!) at 11:10 am
  • Length of Tour: 45 minutes
  • Price: $10 Adults/$5 Students/Age 5 and under free
  • Please wear comfortable shoes for walking over uneven terrain

We are in the process of creating a new tour which will allow visitors to explore African American history at Ashland from slavery to emancipation and beyond. African Americans who were enslaved or employed at Ashland left an indelible mark on the history of the city of Lexington, the state of Kentucky, and the nation. While Clay’s views on slavery will be explored, the focus of the tour will be on the men, women, and children he enslaved at Ashland.
