A diverse, talented, and well-trained group of volunteers make Ashland the excellent historic site that it is. Docents guide groups of people through the mansion, sharing the story of Henry Clay and his home. Many volunteers work in the Museum Store, greeting visitors from across the country and around the world. Others help with school groups, special projects, curatorial research, or as part of the Grounds Crew helping to maintain our beautiful site.
Become a Docent
Ashland’s docents are the public face of our historic site as they share one-hour tours with guests, introducing them to Henry Clay, teaching, explaining, and fostering deeper understanding of American history. Docents are given comprehensive training, coaching, and resources to lead tours. All docents learn the Henry Clay Signature Tour and have the option of learning the Traces: Slavery at Ashland and Women’s Voices tours. Great flexibility with scheduling, ongoing support and learning, wonderful social opportunities — plus the fulfillment of sharing a nationally important site with the public –make becoming an Ashland docent deeply meaningful.

Grounds Crew
Store Volunteer
Do you enjoy gardening, being outdoors, and eradicating invasive species while nurturing native wildflowers and grasses? Do you enjoy meeting new people and sharing Henry Clay’s love of Ashland? If so, join the Ashland Grounds Crew, a growing volunteer group dedicated to keeping the estate beautiful and its arboriculture healthy. Crew members also will have the opportunity to learn the Tree ID and the Grounds Tour.

Be the first person most visitors meet. H. Clay & Co Museum Store volunteers are crucial to Ashland’s operations – you will greet each guest, provide tour and site information, answer questions, check in guests for tours, sell new tickets, and ring up merchandise purchased from the store.
